  • The Art of Sound – Aural Automotive Pleasure

There are some sounds that just hit people the right way. Whether it be the sharp, raucous bark of a Porsche flat 6, the whine of a ported Eaton, or the low thrum of an STi, there’s a sound for everyone. Here’s a list of my favorites, but please note I didn’t do this just for fun. We want to hear back from our readers with their choices as well. Note: yes, I know that some of these cars may or may not be modded.

A personal favorite of mine is the exhaust note of a Terminator Cobra. The 4.6 liter DOHC topped with an Eaton sounds mighty fine in my book. With enough bite to back up the bark, termie Cobras always give me aural pleasure (get your mind out of the gutter, sickos — I said AURAL, not oral).

Next up is one of the only cars that you can throw a cat-back on and actually have it sound good — the Subaru Impreza. The unique exhaust note is considered to be caused by the unequal length header design. Either way, no matter how it’s created, it always sounds damn good to me. You’ve gotta love the way they rumble. Videos never seem to do the sound justice, but give this one a shot.

Coming up next is something off the wall for most people. The Mazda 26B 4-rotor. I’ve always been impressed by the way that the 26B sounds. Think of a cammed, big block loping at idle, and then think of that same big block revving to 10k in a second, sounding like a streetbike or F1 car. Mazda essentially put two 13B’s together and came up with this 700hp monstrosity. The 26B was used in Mazda’s legendary 787B racecar.

Rounding out the list is an Italian V12 that can turn to 8500RPM! Regardless of what you just muttered behind your screen, I say the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 sounds good enough to be on this list. The original Italian bull was quick enough with 571 Horsepower, but Lamborghini decided to step it up a notch and increase displacement from 6.2 to 6.5 liters, raising power to a stout 640. Emitting pure emotion out of the center tailpipes like only an Italian machine can, the LP640 is good enough to be here.

I could probably list 20 more cars that I want to be on this list, but alas, I have no more room. Instead I’d rather hear what makes all of our readers tingle, so be sure to respond with what engine sounds give you aural pleasure (keep it clean folks, my mom reads these blogs).

  • National Speed Quickies: Rocket Car, Lambocop, Tiger Woods Needs a Ride

It’s boring to read the news, that’s why National Speed is cutting out all the fat and giving you only the stuff that matters. No politics, sports, or world events — unless its automotive related. We understand that you’re busy people and don’t want to read boring introductory paragraphs (irony!) so let’s cut to the chase and give you all the news that’s fit to print and probably some that’s not…

Fox News is reporting that a British Rocket car powered by a jet engine is set to break the landspeed record. Commisioned by several divisions of the British government including the Ministry of Defense, the rocket could reach 1,000 mph in a record shattering 40 seconds. And even though it looks like a high-powered adult novelty toy, the rocket looks like it’d be a blast to drive…I’d just hate to see the gas bill on that thing. What’s a gallon of rocket fuel going for these days anyway? Probably about the same as Regular 87. Zing!

Tiger Woods may be putting from the rough when it comes to his endorsement contract with General Motors. The stalwart automotive company currently reeling from horrible economic conditions is considering whether or not to cut Tiger loose from his extremely lucrative contract after it expires in 2009. Lucky for Tiger he’s got a stable of free Buicks and Gatorade endorsements to last him through the economic apocalypse.

Lamborghini recently supplied the Italian State Police with a customized Gallardo LP560 for use as a squad car. With speeds upwards of 200 MPH, criminals are going to need a rocket up their tail pipe to outrun this mean machine.

And that concludes the this week’s National Speed quickie. Hope it was as good for you as it was for us. As usual if you have any news you’d like to discuss leave us a comment. Stay Classy!

  • National Speed Quickies: Killer Burnout, Lamborghini Unveils Estoque Concept, Chrysler Electric Boogaloos

It’s boring to read the news, that’s why National Speed is cutting out all the fat and giving you only the stuff that matters. No politics, sports, or world events — unless its automotive related. Road rage gets the better of us all sometimes but Serena Sutton-Smith has taken it to the next level. After purposefully crashing her car into a Fiat, Smith continued pushing the petal to the metal until her engine caught fire and her tires disintegrated. With the car completely engulfed in flames, bystanders tried to remove Serena from the vehicle, who instead of running for her life opted to remain behind the wheel and utter a simple and eloquent, “F*ck off.” That is what I call some serious road rage. Check out Car Domain and the Times Online for more info.

Lamborghini unveiled their latest not-so-well-kept-secret at the Paris Auto Show and its turned out to be none other than a four door sports car. Yawn! While there’s no denying that the Estoque Concept is a slick looking sports car, I was holding out hope for a high performance Lamborghini minivan. At least that would be something interesting after the ridiculous amount of teasing they’ve done with the Estoque.

Chrysler recently held a press event to debut their new selection of electric vehicles. This little engine that couldn’t is certain to turn a few heads, probably towards the nearest toilet to vomit from the sickening cuteness — it makes the VW Bug look like a Hummer.

And that concludes this week’s National Speed quickie. Hope it was as good for you as it was for us. As usual if you have any news to submit leave us a comment or send us an emial and we’ll post it in a future blog. Stay Classy!

  • National Speed Quickies: 2010 Mustang, 125 rwhp Golf Cart, and New Lambo Concept

The 2010 Ford Mustang has made another appearance, this time getting snapped by the guys over at Jalopnik. Judging from the pics little has changed since the last iteration. Seems that Ford is sticking to the old axiom, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.” While that may be true, there’s only so long the current crop of Mustangs will hold people’s interest until they start to get a little bored…if they aren’t already.

Navarez Racing Products mounted a four cylinder Yamaha R1 rocket bike engine to a golf cart — and it generates 125 rear wheel horsepower! Loyal readers of our blog will realize that I have a slight obsession with golf carts, especially ridiculously powered ones like this one. Check out the vid below to see it in action.

Edmunds Inside Line is reporting that Lamborghini will unveil something completely different than what they’re known for at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. What could it possibly be? A High-performance luxury mini-van? Flying Hybrids? Rumors abound but sources close to Lamborghini say that the grand unveiling will most likely be a four-door super sedan. No word on if it flies.

And that concludes this week’s quickie. Was it as good for you as it was for us? As usual if you have any news to submit leave us a comment or send us an email and we’ll post it in a future blog. Stay Classy!
