  • National Speed Quickie: Snakes on a Dash

It’s been awhile since our last quickie, so I thought it’d be best to set the mood with a little wine and romance. Just kidding. I’m not one for long winded speeches or intros, so whaddaya say we get down to business and report on all the automotive news that’s fit to print…and probably some that isn’t.

“Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” An 80 year old goat breeder by the name of Noel Padgham recently took her car to the shop after it began making a clunking noise. Seems like a rather mundane way to start off a news blog right? Don’t worry, it gets better.

Upon opening the dash, mechanic Kit Carson (no relation to the frontiersman) was greeted by the pants filling sight of a three foot long python wrapped around the ventilation fan. To make matters worse, the snake was still alive!

After changing his shorts, Carson took the snake to the local vet where it now awaits its next exciting trip perhaps on a plane, or possibly train. No word on if Samuel L. Jackson will be involved.

Special thanks to Jalopnik for originally breaking the story and to whatever poor bastard wrote Snakes on a Plane…even two years after that steaming pile’s release we’re still getting mileage out of the title.

  • National Speed Quickies: Rocket Car, Lambocop, Tiger Woods Needs a Ride

It’s boring to read the news, that’s why National Speed is cutting out all the fat and giving you only the stuff that matters. No politics, sports, or world events — unless its automotive related. We understand that you’re busy people and don’t want to read boring introductory paragraphs (irony!) so let’s cut to the chase and give you all the news that’s fit to print and probably some that’s not…

Fox News is reporting that a British Rocket car powered by a jet engine is set to break the landspeed record. Commisioned by several divisions of the British government including the Ministry of Defense, the rocket could reach 1,000 mph in a record shattering 40 seconds. And even though it looks like a high-powered adult novelty toy, the rocket looks like it’d be a blast to drive…I’d just hate to see the gas bill on that thing. What’s a gallon of rocket fuel going for these days anyway? Probably about the same as Regular 87. Zing!

Tiger Woods may be putting from the rough when it comes to his endorsement contract with General Motors. The stalwart automotive company currently reeling from horrible economic conditions is considering whether or not to cut Tiger loose from his extremely lucrative contract after it expires in 2009. Lucky for Tiger he’s got a stable of free Buicks and Gatorade endorsements to last him through the economic apocalypse.

Lamborghini recently supplied the Italian State Police with a customized Gallardo LP560 for use as a squad car. With speeds upwards of 200 MPH, criminals are going to need a rocket up their tail pipe to outrun this mean machine.

And that concludes the this week’s National Speed quickie. Hope it was as good for you as it was for us. As usual if you have any news you’d like to discuss leave us a comment. Stay Classy!

  • National Speed Quickies: 2010 Mustang, 125 rwhp Golf Cart, and New Lambo Concept

The 2010 Ford Mustang has made another appearance, this time getting snapped by the guys over at Jalopnik. Judging from the pics little has changed since the last iteration. Seems that Ford is sticking to the old axiom, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.” While that may be true, there’s only so long the current crop of Mustangs will hold people’s interest until they start to get a little bored…if they aren’t already.

Navarez Racing Products mounted a four cylinder Yamaha R1 rocket bike engine to a golf cart — and it generates 125 rear wheel horsepower! Loyal readers of our blog will realize that I have a slight obsession with golf carts, especially ridiculously powered ones like this one. Check out the vid below to see it in action.

Edmunds Inside Line is reporting that Lamborghini will unveil something completely different than what they’re known for at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. What could it possibly be? A High-performance luxury mini-van? Flying Hybrids? Rumors abound but sources close to Lamborghini say that the grand unveiling will most likely be a four-door super sedan. No word on if it flies.

And that concludes this week’s quickie. Was it as good for you as it was for us? As usual if you have any news to submit leave us a comment or send us an email and we’ll post it in a future blog. Stay Classy!
